new CME requirements and next test window

Physicians interested in obtaining certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine should carefully note the following information related to the next exam window and updated continuing medical education (CME) requirements.

NEXT EXAM WINDOW

The next certification exam for obesity medicine physicians will be administered at Prometric computer-based test centers from February 26-March 1, 2018.

Early application deadline: October 15, 2017 ($1500 fee)
Final application deadline: November 15, 2017 ($1750 fee)
Test window: February 26-March 1, 2018

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: CME PATHWAY

Required Credentials

Proof of an active medical license in the U.S. or Canada.

Proof of completion of a residency in the U.S. or Canada.

Active board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board or osteopathic medicine equivalent.

Required CME Credits

A minimum of 60 credit hours of continuing medical education (CME) recognized by the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award (AMA PRA) Category 1 Credits on the topic of obesity are required for certification.

The CME credits must include at least 30 credits earned through attendance at one or more of the following GROUP ONE meetings:

  • OBESITY MEDICINE ASSOCIATION FALL CONFERENCE
  • OBESITY MEDICINE ASSOCIATION  SPRING CONFERENCE
  • COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF HUMAN NUTRITION OBESITY COURSE
  • HARVARD BLACKBURN COURSE IN OBESITY MEDICINE
  • OBESITYWEEK

The remaining 30 CME credits may be completed through attendance at additional GROUP ONE meetings or through GROUP TWO study, which includes at-home CME activities and/or attendance at other live meetings where obesity is the specific educational topic.

Please note: ABOM does not accept credit from Medscape or UptoDate.

CME Credit Timeline

All 60 CME credits must be earned within 36 months prior to the application deadline.

All CME credits must be earned and documented at the time of application.

NOTE FROM THE ABOM MEDICAL DIRECTOR: ABOM applicants seeking certification through the CME Pathway are required to meet minimum continuing medical education (CME) credit hour requirements on the topic of obesity as set forth in the current ABOM Policies & Procedures.  The ABOM will not accept CME credit hours on topics outside the field of obesity medicine and has sole discretion regarding whether a CME course fulfills the field of obesity medicine requirement. The ABOM CME requirement is intended to direct self-study in an in-depth and comprehensive manner that prepares applicants to become ABOM Diplomates but does not guarantee an applicant’s success.
