An Obesity Medicine Curriculum Increases the Obesity Care Self-Efficacy of Internal Medicine Residents in the Primary Care Setting
Marci Laudenslager, MD MHS
Published in Clinical Obesity in 2024, this study examined how a multicomponent curriculum for obesity medicine in primary care influenced Internal Medicine residents’ self-efficacy to treat obesity by comparing outcomes between residents who had and did not have access to the curriculum. The research team found that the curriculum was feasible and increased residents’ self-efficacy for counseling on nutrition, behavior change, weight-gain-promoting medications, anti-obesity medications, and metabolic-bariatric surgical procedures beyond what is achieved with usual Internal Medicine training. The ABOM Foundation provided funding to support this research.
