On January 13, 2026, the Obesity Association — a division of the American Diabetes Association — released the chapter on the Pharmacologic Treatment of Obesity in Adults as part of their Standards of Care in Overweight and Obesity. This article was simultaneously published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care as well as the inaugural edition of Diabetes, Obesity, and Cardiometabolic CARE journals. The creation of these standards reflects the work of the American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee for Obesity, which has been chaired by Dr. Kimberly Gudzune who is the Chief Medical Officer for the ABOM Foundation. Dr. Gudzune led the development of this chapter with Dr. Louis Aronne, who is the Sanford I. Weill Professor of Metabolic Research at Weill-Cornell Medical College and previously served as ABOM chair. Other ABOM-certified obesity medicine physicians also contributed to the development of this chapter including Drs. Caroline Apovian, Angela Fitch, Scott Kahan, Robert Kushner, John Ostrominski, and Fatima Cody Stanford.
Given that the ABOM Foundation aims to support the obesity medicine physician workforce, the organization endorses documents produced by other professional organizations that are determined to be rigorously developed and relevant to obesity medicine — the Pharmacologic Treatment of Obesity in Adults: Standards of Care in Overweight and Obesity has been endorsed by the ABOM Foundation. This chapter has also received endorsement from the Obesity Action Coalition, Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society.
